A study done at Penn State found no correlation between whether a middle school sold junk food and the BMI of the students. This makes complete sense to me. I know this blog is mainly about exercise & training, but it’s also about health, and nutrition is a part of that. This licenses me to give my two cents on childhood obesity rates. I think it’s all about the parents & home culture. Parents need to be good role models for their kids. There were bags of Dorritos and Dunkaroos in my house. I wasn’t brought up to think junk food was evil. I was brought up in a family that loved to eat and loved to eat well. I ate my veggies because I liked veggies, and I liked veggies partially because I saw my parents and my sisters liking them. Kids have to be taught how to eat, and if they do, they’ll make the right choices both inside and outside of the house.
Give a kid a carrot, and they’ll maybe eat the carrot. Teach a kid to like eating well and they’ll eat carrots FOR LIFE. Or something like that.
